Honda to launch plug-in Clarity sedan next year
Honda Motor Co. will launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle, an electrified variant of the Clarity sedan, in China sometime next year to expand its lineup of electrified vehicles.
The plug-in Clarity will be fitted with an upgraded version of the “Sport Hybrid” powertrain system installed on current hybrid vehicles, Honda said at the Guangzhou auto show last week. The Clarity can be used “almost” as a full electric vehicle by drivers in typical daily use. It will be assembled in China at Honda’s joint venture with Dongfeng Motor Group.
Additional details about the plug-in Clarity were not disclosed. At the show, Honda also introduced a full-cell variant of the Clarity but it did not provide a timeframe for the vehicle’s rollout in China. The plug-in Clarity will become the third electrified vehicle introduced in China by Honda.
In October, Honda’s joint venture with Dongfeng and GAC Motor Co. each started selling a battery electric crossover -- the NX-V and VE-1.Honda is one of the few global mass-market brands that have bucked the downturn in China’s new-vehicle market. In the first ten months, its local deliveries rose 5.2 percent to top 1.27 million.
